Hypothyroidism - Homeopathy

The thyroid gland is one of the most important organ in the body. It is an endocrine gland located around the windpipe (trachea), in the lower front portion of the throat. It is made up of three portions, one lobe on each side of the trachea, and a connecting portion called the isthmus.

The function of the thyroid is to convert iodine into hormone triiodothyronine(T3) and thyroxin (T4). The secretions of these two active compounds regulate metabolism (the rate and manner in which we turn food into energy and expend it). To determine the activity of the thyroid, a chemical test known as T3 and T4 is performed.

Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by a deficient functioning of the thyroid gland resulting in decreased activity and secretion of thyroxin with low metabolism. The symptoms are lack of energy, thick skin, and intolerance to cold.

The incomplete development of the thyroid gland at birth is known as cretinism. It may result from inadequate iodine intake by the mother while pregnant. Mild inactivity of the gland in later life, may lead to weight gain, lack of energy, and a slow mentality. It may be due to thyroid gland removal, radiation treatment of hyperthyroidism, post-partum thyroiditis, Hashimoto disease, and the failure of the hypothalamus or pituitary gland.

Homeopathy in Practice

The homeopathic goal for hypothyroidism is to administer a constitutional remedy to treat the condition on a deep cellular level. Organotherapy, is added to treat an under active gland and to normalize metabolic function.

Hypothyroidism Healing Diet

Eliminate foods that may lower thyroid function such as cabbage, brussel sprouts, peanuts, and cauliflower.

Avoid consumption of refined foods.

Eat a well-balanced diet based on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Consume plenty of leafy, dark green vegetables, sea kelp, iodized salt, organic yogurt, strawberries, navy beans, shrimp, tuna in a can, turkey breast, navy beans, and baked potatoes with the skin.

Take one teaspoon of flax oil, twice a day.
